FortisBC has provided some further insight into the savings customers will see on their monthly gas bills now that the province has removed the consumer carbon tax.

In a news release published on April 1, Fortis said the elimination of the tax will “benefit customers by helping to lower their gas bills.”

The provincial natural gas and electricity provider broke down the price reductions,  highlighting that for the average FortisBC residential gas customer using about 7.5 gigajoules of gas per month, the consumer carbon tax removal will represent over 23 per cent or about $29.89 in savings on their monthly bill compared with rates as of March 31, 2025.

When customers look at their bills, they will also see that the consumer carbon tax charge is no longer listed for natural gas, Renewable Natural Gas (RNG), or propane consumed after April 1. The biomethane credit on RNG, which previously offset the carbon tax charged on RNG, will also be removed.

Fortis said it provides energy services for over 1.3 million homes and businesses in the province.

While the province has axed the consumer carbon tax, the industrial carbon tax is not changing.

Premier David Eby has previously stated that the province will continue to make “big polluters pay.”

The end of the consumer portion of the tax will have far-reaching impacts on British Columbians, including how much they’ll be paying to fill up at the pump and the cost of food, but it also leaves a major revenue gap in the province’s budget.
