As the first few bars of The Belle Game’s exceptional new full-length album Ritual Tradition Habit begin, you get the impression that the music will result in huge explosion of the heart. Recorded by John Raham (Be Good Tanya’s, Frazey Ford) the album is available on October 9, 2012 via Vancouver’s Boompa Records. Through twelve tracks, you experience extreme and gorgeous melodies, rhythmic drumming, textures, soundscapes, ephemera and blissful indulgence. You’re drawn in by lead singer Andrea Lo’s wailing voice, and the hypnotic guitar pushing her through the lyrics.
Over the last two years, the six-piece outfit have been quietly gathering accolades and acclaim on Canada’s west coast. They won Vancouver radio station Shore 104.3 Song Search “Fan Favorite” Award for the tune “Tiny Fires” off their Debut EP, Inventing Letters, and snagged the coveted opening slot for international pop singer Gotye. They also opened for Polaris Music Prize winners Karkwa and much-loved locals Said The Whale.
By the time you reach the album single “Wait Up For You” you’ve given yourself to the music. “Oh, I would wait up for you” cautions the vocalist, joined by energetic trumpets and a bed of luscious and vibrant keyboards and bass lines. Ritual Tradition Habit is their stepping out, their stepping up, and a long awaited musical homecoming.
The Belle Game is Adam Nanji, Katrina Jones, Andrea Lo, Alex Andrew and Rob Chursinoff. They previously released two EPs, Inventing Letters and Sleep to Grow. Vancouver alt-weekly The Georgia Straight describes their music as “…a mix of pastoral pop and percussion-bombed art rock.”
