Current Swell is an Indie/Blues/Rock out=fit based out of Victoria, BC with a penchant for catchy hooks and a matter-of-fact brand of lyricism evocative of Tokyo Police Club. The band was formed in 2004 and in that time they have reimagined their sound several times in search of the elusive “identity.”
Calling them eclectic would be doing a disservice to a band that has spanned the musical gamut from reggae to rock to blues. Current Swell has once again emerged from the musical chrysalis a new band. Long Time Ago is a folk record in the vein of a Mumford and Sons or a Said the Whale and it fits the band like a glove. The album represents a more mature, tighter band with less to say about politics and more to say about pretty much everything else.
I’m not the only one to take note of their new sound either: Current Swell is the most recent winner of the Peak Performance Project—a local radio competition that has served as the launching pad for numerous Canadian bands in recent years. They will have $100,500 to aid them in their blossoming music career.
