It goes without saying: reality TV singing competition The Voice is huge in North America. Now picture how much larger the phenomenon must be for The Voice of China. Contestants from The Voice of China are part of the set list for The Vancouver Spring Show, which brings a welcome mix of multicultural performing artists to Vancouver audiences.
Here are some of the performers hitting the big stage at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on January 4, 2014:
Audiences can look forward to Beijing Olympics composer Liunian Bian; Chinese Idol Yunggiema; The Voice of China singers An Ping and Yinyi Wang; Beijing Dance Drama & Opera lead star Gengxian Lin; acclaimed dancer and choreographer Joel Hanna featuring modern Irish dance troupe The D’Amby Project; traditional Korean drummers Cheondoong Performing Arts Society; breakdance crew Now or Never, and more.
I interviewed Executive Producer Shaun Cui about the upcoming performance:
1) How did this production come about?
Cherry Tao, one of China’s treasured dancers, founded The Vancouver Spring Show to give her talented students the opportunity to share the stage with world-class talent. Now in its 5th year, we are very excited to bring some special guests from all over the world to the Queen Elizabeth stage and celebrate the New Year with audiences.
2) Why should audiences come to the show?
The Vancouver Spring Show is a multicultural variety show. It’s a mix of traditional and modern performances that promote cultural exchange between Canadian and Chinese communities. There are many aspects of Chinese culture that a lot of Vancouverites aren’t exposed to, like variety shows where you have an eclectic mix of performances from musicians, dancers and singers to acrobats.
3) Anything else to add?
This is a dream come true for us, and we’re very grateful for the support we’ve received. As a way of showing our thanks and marking our 5th year in production, we will delight audiences with some very special guests.
