Vancouver Whitecaps star Thomas Müller might already have a post-playing career as a soccer insider set up.
The German footballer had himself a memorable performance on Saturday, scoring a game-winning penalty late in injury time in front of a sold-out BC Place crowd of over 26,000 fans. This helped the Whitecaps defeat St. Louis City SC by a score of 3-2, improving Vancouver’s record to 14-6-7 on the season.
After the game, Müller spoke to the media, where he let it slip that teammate Tristan Blackmon will be getting called up to the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) next month.
Directly after he said it, he hilariously tried to backtrack before accepting defeat.
“Tristan now is nominated for the USA,” Müller said before abruptly pausing. “If he plays good today, ah, the game is already played. In the end, it is what it is, I heard what I heard, congrats to Tristan and congrats to the USA.”

That wasn’t the normal way of announcing a national team promotion, but it was certainly an entertaining way to do it. The 29-year-old Blackmon has been one of the Whitecaps’ most dependable defenders this season, and that hard work will now seemingly be rewarded with a chance to represent his country on the international stage for the first time.
If this turns out to be true, and it likely will, Blackmon would be on the USA’s roster for friendlies against Japan and South Korea in early September.
It’s fair to say Müller is bringing a new type of fun-loving personality to this Whitecaps squad alongside his comprehensive experience. The 35-year-old seems to be enjoying his time in Vancouver so far, even having the opportunity to captain the team in just his second match since signing.
Müller admitted he had reservations about taking up the captaincy so early into his tenure, but that he planned on leading his teammates regardless.
“In the first moments, I was not sure to take the armband right away after one week, maybe not the best idea,” Müller said. “I’m leading anyway, I don’t need the captain’s band.
“My team wants me to take it, and I took it. It was not a problem, I don’t need a captain’s band to try to lead my team.”
Saturday was as great an impression as any to leave in front of a packed home crowd. It marked an important milestone in the German’s storied career, having netted his first-ever MLS goal.
Müller described the experience to reporters.
“It was an amazing moment for me,” Müller said with a smile. “I like to have this pressure, and my teammates were cheering for me. It was a very nice feeling to score this goal in front of our fans.”
