As if the potential Vancouver Whitecaps relocation debacle needed any more drama.

Talk of the Whitecaps leaving Vancouver has hit a fever pitch this week. In the last seven days, Whitecaps fans have protested exuberantly against the exodus of their squad. Meanwhile, relocation rumours to Las Vegas have ramped up, and the club put out an alarming statement about their dire situation.

Politicians have weighed in, including Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim, provincial MLA Ravi Kahlon, and B.C. Premier David Eby.

This comes as delegates from around the world arrived in Vancouver this week to attend Thursday’s FIFA Congress.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber is also in Vancouver this week, where he and Eby met to discuss the future of the Whitecaps on Wednesday.

While Eby threw cold water on a potential solution of the Whitecaps taking ownership of BC Place, he later called his meeting with Garber “constructive.”

However, a social media post from Garber put that notion in question.

David Eby posted a brief video to X at 4:30 p.m. PT, preaching that he would fight to save the team and that “losing the Whitecaps is not an option.”

“To every Whitecaps fan in British Columbia and around the world, I want you to know, we are working hard to save the Whitecaps,” Eby said.

A few hours later, an X account belonging to Garber replied to the video, writing “liar liar pants on fire.”

The post was up for about an hour before being removed. MLS Chief Communications Officer Dan Courtemanche took to X, saying Garber was “hacked.”Ā

“My account was compromised earlier this evening,” Garber said at 10 p.m. PDT. “The issue has been resolved. I appreciate Premier Eby for taking the time to meet with me today.”

According to The Business Standard, recovery for X accounts that have been hacked or compromised typically takes a couple of days. However, the process can take longer for verified accounts, such as Garber’s.

If there’s any solace for Whitecaps fans, perhaps it’s that Garber did say he “appreciated” Eby’s time on Wednesday. The last thing Whitecaps fans need is more fuel poured on the relocation fire.
