Mister: Liquid nitrogen ice cream parlour now open in Yaletown

Jun 2 2016, 9:33 am

Enjoy edible science in dessert form at Mister, Yaletown’s latest foodie addition that uses the extreme cold of liquid nitrogen to create uniquely fresh ice cream in seconds.

Taking over a space previously tenanted by Sweet Bake Shop at 1141 Mainland Street, Mister offers a totally innovative and atmospheric way to make, buy, and eat ice cream. Indeed, at Mister ice cream is made-to-order in retro looking stand mixers, amid swirling clouds of nitrogen-generated steam.

Not only does the chill blast of liquid nitrogen emit an impressive evaporating mist (get it “Mist-er”), which ice cream goers can view from across the glass counter, but it also creates a soft, sumptuous scoop. This noticeably creamier texture is all down to the rapid freezing process, which prevents the formation of large ice crystals.

Currently four flavours are listed on Mister’s menu, Crème Brûlée, Avocado, Dark Chocolate, and Lemon Frozen Yogurt, which are priced at $6 a cup. Customers who fancy something seductively sweet should try the Crème Brûlée. Made with real vanilla bean, frozen custard, and a hand torched crackled caramel top, this moreish treat is the real deal.

Chocoholics will find it hard to resist Mister’s Dark Chocolate scoop. Luxuriously creamy and decadent, this dessert is trouble in a cup. Vegan customers will be happy to note that this Yaletown ice creamery also whips up a non-dairy version.

Those who prefer a slightly less sweet treat should stick their spoon in the Avocado nitrogen fuelled concoction. This balanced yet creamy blend with fresh avocado bits is buttery, with a subtle, almost savory finish and will have ice cream goers longing for more.

Mister also offers fresh-made ice cream pints ($10 including a $1 jar deposit) available for take-out, and has plans to introduce ice cream sandwiches and other special items throughout the summer.

Freshly churned nitro-ice cream has captivated customers around the globe, and finally surfaced in Vancouver. Mister’s owners Michael Lai and Tommy Choi were inspired to bring the liquid nitrogen process to Vancouver after discovering the unique product on their travels. And boy are we glad they did.

To celebrate their opening, Mister will be running a free pint promotion on Sunday, June 3. The first 50 customers to purchase a cup of ice cream will receive a free pint to take home!
