Yesterday was another eventful 24 hours in what’s been an action-packed Vancouver Canucks season.
News broke that the Canucks nearly traded J.T. Miller shortly before their game against the rival Edmonton Oilers. It took the already present trade rumours surrounding the 31-year-old to another level. There’s a lot of outside noise with this team, and specifically Miller, right now.
Despite that distraction, the Canucks put forth one of their best efforts over the past few weeks, defeating the surging Oilers 3-2. Miller was one of the team’s best players, playing a hard matchup role against Connor McDavid, recording two assists, and winning an impressive 18 face-offs.
“It was one of our better team efforts this year for sure, we should feel proud about it,” said Miller postgame.
“[I] just try to focus on the game, it’s probably good you’re playing the Oilers tonight, have a matchup assignment, try to keep me focused.”
When asked more directly about the trade rumours, Miller tried to steer the conversation back to the game, although he did reaffirm his commitment to the team.
“I’m planning on being a Canuck today, tomorrow. Whatever happens, happens. I’m focused on the next game.”
The two-way centre has a no-movement clause in his contract so he holds a lot of control over his future.
When the star plays like he did last night, it’s hard to imagine the Canucks making a trade which results in them getting better. He was one of the most impactful players on the ice and contributed on both ends, shutting down one of the best players in the world while also creating chances for his team.
“There’s been a lot of noise. I’ve been here two-and-a-half years, he’s played a lot of good hockey,” said coach Rick Tocchet.
“He’s a guy that’s always going to compete, show up, a lot of passion, a lot of care,” continued captain Quinn Hughes.
Miller now has 31 points in 35 games. While he’s not on pace for the 103-points he managed last season, it’s a respectable rate for a slumping player. He’ll try to improve that over the second half of the season, the only question is which team he’ll be doing it for.
