Miller out, Canucks recall Cannata

Dec 20 2017, 3:17 am

The Canucks will be without Ryan Miller for at least one game, and have called up goaltender Joe Cannata from the Utica Comets.

Miller left the Canucks’ last game during the shootout, forcing Jacob Markstrom to come into the game. He appeared to suffer an injury after the Panthers’ first shooter, though after the game, the party line was that Miller suffered cramps.

That may be true, but the way that NHL teams disclose injuries, we can never be certain. Yesterday, the Canucks said they wouldn’t recall anyone.

It’s interesting to note that Joe Cannata was recalled from Utica rather than their starter, Richard Bachman. Cannata has outplayed Bachman in Utica, and the Canucks are rewarding him with an NHL pay cheque.

Cannata, 25, has appeared in 16 games for the Comets this year, more than any other goaltender. He has a 9-5-1 record, with a 2.49 GAA, and a .907 SV%.

Tonight’s game is the last game for the Canucks before the Christmas break. Their next game after tonight is at home on Boxing Day, against the Edmonton Oilers.
