At long last, Canada has won a gold medal at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.

Mikaël Kingsbury claimed gold in men’s dual moguls on Sunday, after coming agonizingly close to winning gold three days ago.

The 33-year-old from Deux-Montagnes, Que. is considered the greatest moguls skier of all-time. This is the fifth Olympic medal of Kingsbury’s illustrious career. He previously won gold in men’s moguls in 2018, and collected silver in 2014, 2022, and 2026 in the same event.

Dual moguls is a new event at the Winter Olympics. It features freestyle skiers competing one-on-one, as they race down the mountain on matching moguls courses.

Kingsbury defeated Ikuma Horishima in the final, after the Japanese skier lost control on the course. Horishima settled for silver, while Australia’s Matt Graham claimed bronze.

Because Horishima stumbled, Kingsbury knew he had gold secured gold as he crossed the finish line. It was pure jubilation for Kingsbury, who was likely skiing the final race of his Olympic career.

This was Canada’s longest wait for a gold medal at the Winter Olympics in 38 years, as Kingsbury is crowned Olympic champion on Day 9 of competition.

Canada now has nine medals, one gold, three silver, and five bronze.
