Three Mexican citizens have been confirmed dead after a tragic hiking incident at Meachen Creek Falls in southeastern British Columbia over the Labour Day long weekend.
On Sept. 1, 2025, Kimberley RCMP were alerted by a GPS SOS that three hikers had gone over the waterfall.
Responding officers found a 68-year-old woman deceased about halfway down the falls.
The next day, search teams recovered the body of a 35-year-old woman.
RCMP confirmed on Sunday, Sept. 7, that the third hiker, a 35-year-old man, was also located deceased.
Recovery efforts for his body are ongoing.
“All three people were Mexican citizens,” the RCMP said in a release. “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased.”
The recovery involved multiple teams, including RCMP Police Dog Services, RCMP Drone Operations, the RCMP Dive Team, BC Ambulance, the BC Coroners Service, Victim Services, Big Horn Helicopters, and several Search and Rescue groups.
Police say their efforts and skills “have been appreciated by visiting members of the deceased family.”
Parks Canada reminds visitors that preparation is key to staying safe on the trails.
Hikers are urged to choose routes suited to their ability, carry maps and safety gear, and let someone know their plans.
Officials also stress the importance of proper footwear, bringing enough water and food, and keeping a safe distance from wildlife.
