The Future of Metrotown is Higher Buildings

Dec 19 2017, 1:09 pm

Burnaby already has two tall towers approved and under construction. These will be the tallest towers outside downtown Vancouver (sorry Surrey but Burnaby beat you to it, one day you’ll build one of those fantasy proposals) and now the plan for the Station Square/Metrotown redevelopment reveals even higher towers in Burnaby’s future.

If approved, the first phase will  include retail at ground level, offices on the next two storeys, and five residential towers ranging in height from 35 to 57 storeys.

Metrotown is already a busy hub and with all these additional towers being proposed it’s going to be an even busier hub. Plans are calling for towers to the south of Metrotown Station as well to the north. It looks as though Burnaby is making a serious push to increase density.

Look for Both Brentwood and Metrotown to become the continued focal points of redevelopment. Now if only they could improve their street level pedestrian activity. Redevelopment near shopping malls usually means little outside foot traffic. I don’t see that changing much.
