Huge street festivals and triathlon closing Metro Vancouver roads this weekend

Several major street festivals and a triathlon are happening in Metro Vancouver this weekend, and commuters and residents are warned of road closures to accommodate the activities.

The open-air events are planned in Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Langley, New Westminster, and Vancouver, so you’ll want to give yourself extra time to arrive at your destinations.

Kicking things off, the T100 Triathlon World Tour will run on Saturday, Aug. 15 and Sunday, Aug. 16, coming to Vancouver for the second year in a row.

According to UBC, several roads in the area will be closed to ensure that the massive event happens smoothly.

“Saturday, Aug. 15: Road closures will be in effect from 6:45 to 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the west side of campus. The southbound lane of Marine Drive will be closed, but northbound access will remain available with assistance from traffic control personnel,” announced UBC Campus + Community Planning.

“Sunday, Aug. 16: The most significant impacts will occur from 5 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., when NW/SW Marine Drive will be fully closed between 16th Avenue and East Mall. ”

Parking and transit in the area will also be impacted during the triathlon, and traffic control personnel will be on site to assist participants and pedestrians.

In Langley, the 30th annual Arts Alive Festival is closing Fraser Highway between 204th and 206th streets on Saturday for a free, family event that will showcase over 200 visual and performing artists.

Stop by to see live music, artists and artisans, a children’s fun zone, and surprise performances throughout the day.

The annual New West Pride Street Festival is also happening on Saturday, Aug. 15, in Downtown New Westminster from 3 to 8 p.m.

Columbia Street will be closed to traffic from Fourth Street to Eighth Street so that thousands of guests can enjoy live performances, family-friendly activities, vendors and food trucks, and more.

Roads will be closed from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and parking restrictions will be in place from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The popular Downtown Port Coquitlam Car Show returns for its 21st year on Saturday, Aug. 15 and Sunday, Aug. 16, with hundreds of collectible vehicles showcased. But you may want to leave your own at home.

The Saturday night Car Cruise and BBQ will see hundreds of participating vehicles cruising around the neighbourhood along a route where PoCo residents can watch and cheer. There will be some road closures in place to help facilitate the event.

Then, on Sunday, the show will take place throughout the neighbourhood. Organizers said they expect over 70,000 people to check out the more than 500 vehicles on display. You’ll be able to see all kinds of unique cars, from custom builds to classic rides.

Road closures will be expanded to accommodate the street festivals, including longer sections of Shaughnessy, Wilson, Elgin, Donald, and Mary Hill, which are closed from early morning until late evening.

Fans of street festivals will also want to check out the annual Port Moody Car Free Day on Sunday.

Leave the car at home and walk, bike, or take public transit to the celebrations on St. John’s Street between Queens and Moody Street.

St. John’s Street will be closed to all vehicle traffic between Douglas and Moody streets from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. for the family-friendly event. Make a day of it by checking out the live music and performances, plenty of food vendors, and over 100 businesses, artisans, and non-profit groups.
