A Langley speeder that went nearly triple the speed limit in his Ferrari has irked some Metro Vancouver residents.
It’s not just the speeding that upsets some folks; it’s the punishment.
Langley RCMP shared the details of the incident on Monday morning, saying that a Ferrari driver was travelling 124 km/h in a 50 km/h zone over the weekend. The driver was caught on May 24 in a residential neighbourhood near Wagonwheel Crescent and 56th Avenue.

A second radar reading clocked the driver at 123 km/h just 97.9 metres further down the road.

While it might sound like the RCMP stated the obvious, it said, “This level of speed in a residential area poses a significant risk to public safety.”
The driver is a 48-year-old Surrey man. He was fined $483, and his vehicle was to be impounded for seven days. That’s the part that has some folks irked.
Many pointed out that it’s not the RCMP’s fault; they simply enforce the existing rules.
Folks on social media, including on the Langley subreddit, weighed in on the punishment for the 48-year-old speeder.
“Fines mean absolutely nothing when you can just pay your way out of them,” one user said.
Someone else commented on the general quality of driving in Langley, saying, “It’s absolutely astonishing how bad the drivers are in Langley.”
Another Reddit user said, “Should have driver’s licence taken away for 3+ months automatically.” In response to that comment, someone suggested that people who drive this fast should be uninsurable.
Responding to Langley RCMP’s post on X, someone suggested the driver be banned from driving entirely.
Driving at such excessive speeds in neighbourhoods where families live and children play is completely unacceptable,
said Sergeant Zynal Sharoom of the Langley RCMP in a statement.
We take these violations seriously and will continue our enforcement efforts to keep our roads safe.
What do you think a fair consequence for driving this fast in a residential zone would be?
