Metro Vancouver to see "coldest conditions" of the season, snow next week

Feb 6 2021, 11:02 pm

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for parts of Metro Vancouver as cold Arctic air heads toward the region.

The alert was posted Saturday afternoon, and is in effect for several areas:

  • Metro Vancouver – central including the City of Vancouver Burnaby and New Westminster
  • Metro Vancouver – North Shore including West Vancouver and North Vancouver
  • Metro Vancouver – northeast including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge
  • Metro Vancouver – southeast including Surrey and Langley
  • Metro Vancouver – southwest including Richmond and Delta

“Following a relatively mild first half of winter, a transition to much colder conditions will begin throughout BC,” Environment Canada said.

“Cold Arctic air is currently pushing southwards across the BC Interior, and towards the BC coast through the remainder of the weekend.”

The weather authority is warning that temperatures in the Interior will be 10 to 20 degrees below the seasonal average, while coastal areas will see the temperature drop five to 10 degrees below average.

The cold air will be in place by Monday, Environment Canada said, and will “persist” for the remainder of the week.

According to The Weather Network, temperatures will drop to -9° by Wednesday night, and scattered flurries are in the forecast for Tuesday.
