13 deserving Metro Vancouver charities to support on Giving Tuesday

Now that the dust has settled on another Black Friday and Cyber Monday, it’s time to shift the focus away from consumer spending and toward giving back to those in need.

This week sees the return of Giving Tuesday, a day dedicated to helping non-profits support those who can use a little extra help in our community.

To help continue the momentum for the world’s largest generosity movement, we’re shining a light on the meaningful work being carried out by these Metro Vancouver-based charities.

Of course, there are many more deserving charities around the region that need our help. Let us know your favourite ones to support in the comments.

Greater Vancouver Food Bank

Greater Vancouver Food Bank

The Greater Vancouver Food Bank (GVFB) assists over 16,000 individuals and families every month, all without recurring government funding. In the 2025 impact report, it reported that it distributed over five million pounds of healthy food to its clients through the GVFB locations, and over four million pounds of food to its community agency partners, and the need is increasing each year.

Vancouver Pride Society

Vancouver Pride Society is the host and organizer of the annual Pride Parade and festival, as well as other events for 2SLGBTQIA+ people and the greater community throughout the year. The organization states that its goal is to “produce events that reflect the pride the 2SLGBTQIA+ community has in itself,” as well as building a sense of togetherness and increasing the overall well-being of everyone who joins in the celebrations.

St. Paul’s Foundation

St. Paul’s Foundation raises funds for equipment, life-saving research, community programs, and other essential services at St. Paul’s as well as other Providence Health Care hospitals and long-term care homes in B.C. Its annual Lights of Hope campaign has returned for its 28th year in downtown Vancouver, with hundreds of thousands of patients and residents impacted by donors’ generosity.

Regional Animal Protection Society (RAPS)

RAPS is a non-profit, no-kill animal services agency. Its cat sanctuary serves as a home for hundreds of feral, abandoned, and surrendered cats that are cared for by RAPS volunteers.

The society opened its permanent RAPS Adoption Centre in 2022, operates the RAPS Animal Hospital with a special team of veterinarians who care for the animals, and continues to raise funds to complete the new RAPS Dog Sanctuary.

The Landing Youth Centre

The Landing Centre is a Vancouver youth community hub supporting vulnerable young people and their families in the Downtown Eastside, Grandview-Woodlands, and Strathcona.

Youth are given a safe place to build connections, share meals, and gain access to programs like one-on-one tutoring and free clinical counselling.

ALS Society of B.C.

The ALS Society of B.C. provides direct support to ALS patients to ensure a good quality of life. This includes vital equipment, technology and support needed to maintain independence and dignity.

ALS is a neurodegenerative disease that shares characteristics with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. There are currently over 500 people in British Columbia and the Yukon living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

Employ to Empower

Employ to Empower

Employ to Empower is a Vancouver-based grassroots charity that supports people with work and social barriers through entrepreneurial and self-advocacy resources.

The charity that uses entrepreneurship to empower low-income communities to overcome barriers to employment. Over 400 people have taken its program since 2018, overcoming mental or physical health challenges, disability, and recovery from addiction, with an average completion rate of 87 per cent.

Canuck Place Children’s Hospice

As the only pediatric palliative care provider in B.C. and the Yukon, Canuck Place cares for over 900 children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. To help them make the most of the time they have, a team of compassionate clinical experts provides these families with complex medical care, counselling, and other family services to ensure that short lives are given the gift of great days.

Coast Mental Health

Coast Mental Health has supported people living with mental health challenges with housing, support services and employment and education opportunities since 1972. Funds raised through the non-profit foundation are used to pilot new approaches to community-based mental health care, provide education bursaries, and more.

BC Cancer Foundation

The foundation is the fundraising partner of B.C. Cancer and works to raise funds to advance cancer research and care for British Columbians. These include a world-leading immunotherapy program; a first-in-Canada, province-wide lung cancer screening program; and more.

Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre

Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre

The Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre is a non-profit that is dedicated to providing a safe, non-judgmental environment for all self-identifying women. Over 1,800 women access a bed at their three overnight shelters each year.

DEWC provides those in need with meals, counselling, and advocacy. The non-profit also offers housing outreach, service referral and navigation, and access to peer programs.

Dress for Success Vancouver

Dress for Success Vancouver is a registered charity that offers free clothing and professional training to women who are looking to join the workforce and achieve financial independence.

Vancouver is the first DFS chapter established outside the U.S., and the diversity of the city brings women, gender diverse individuals, and newcomers from all different backgrounds to the organization.

Vancouver International Film Festival

VIFF is a charitable non-profit organization that supports creator development, spotlights new and diverse voices, and showcases thrilling new ways we see ourselves and the world around us through film.

Some of their important community initiatives include the Ignite: High School Program and the Catalyst Mentorship program.
