Major Metro Vancouver road closures coming thanks to aging water main

Burnaby road closures are set to last into 2026 as Metro Vancouver replaces a water main that dates back to the 1930s.
The Central Park Water Main ā Imperial Section is being constructed “to replace an existing water main that was built in the 1930s and is reaching the end of its service life,” Metro Vancouver Regional District (MVRD) said in a notice issued Oct. 3.
Traffic impacts now in effect
According to MVRD, the following restrictions are already in place and will continue through late 2025:
- Single-lane alternating traffic on Imperial Street between Brantford Avenue and Sperling Avenue
- No through traffic on Empress Avenue
The release states that starting in October 2025 and lasting into early 2026, drivers will see further restrictions:
- Road closure on Imperial Street, east of Kingsway to Waltham Avenue
- Road closure on Imperial Street, east of Sellers Avenue to Kingsway
- No left turns onto Imperial Street from Kingsway
- No parking within the construction zone

“Temporary detours are in place. Please reduce speed and follow the direction of signage and traffic control personnel while travelling in the area,” MVRD advised in the release.
MVRD said it is “working with the City of Burnaby to minimize traffic disruptions wherever possible.”
The project is part of the regionās long-term investment in water infrastructure.
The Central Park Water Main was originally installed in the 1930s and has reached the end of its service life, according to the release.
Replacing it now is meant to secure safe and reliable drinking water for decades to come.
MVRD said in the release that it is working with the City of Burnaby to minimize traffic impacts as much as possible.
