Messi chirps Vancouver Whitecaps fans after they hilariously trolled him

Thursday night was a good one for Vancouver Whitecaps fans.

The club pulled off one of the biggest wins in Whitecaps franchise history, beating Lionel Messi and Inter Miami CF 2-0 in the first leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup semi-final.

The massive result came in front of a Whitecaps MLS-era record crowd of 53,837 fans at BC Place. The stadium was rocking, and while many of the fans were there to see Messi, the cheering was staunchly for the home team.

Vancouver fans have clearly not forgotten about last year when Messi skipped out on coming to town at the last minute. The Argentinian star was booed every time he touched the ball.

After the game, with Whitecaps fans savouring a huge 2-0 victory, some took the chance to troll Messi as he was coming off the field. One fan held up a Cristiano Ronaldo jersey and made sure Messi saw it. Ronaldo has been one of Messi’s greatest rivals throughout his career.

The soccer legend didn’t look too pleased. He was talking back at the Whitecaps fans and seemed to be saying, “Just you wait,” as this semi-final is far from over.

There’s still a second leg to be played, and Miami has pulled off big comebacks before. Hopefully, Whitecaps fans didn’t poke the bear when it comes to one of the greatest to ever play the game.

Vancouver winning by two goals puts the pressure on Miami to perform back in Florida. Perhaps bigger than the winning margin was the fact that the Whitecaps held Miami to zero away goals. Away goals are used as the tiebreaker in case the aggregate score ends up even.

The second leg is next Wednesday.

This means that if the Whitecaps can score just once in Miami, they would need to concede four times to lose. That’s a very strong position to hold heading into the second half of this semi-final.

Mexican teams Cruz Azul and Tigres UANL are on the other side of the bracket, and the winner of that will face the winner of Inter Miami and the Whitecaps.
