Mermaid Comedy: stand-up returns to Railway Club

Dec 19 2017, 10:39 pm

Stand‐up comedy has returned to Vancouver’s historic Railway Club. Mermaid Comedy will light up Railway’s back room on the first and third Monday of each month and feature some of Canada’s best comedic talent.

Along with the noteworthy national acts, Mermaid will showcase the local scene’s most promising up and comers.

Created by Vancouver comedians Dylan Williamson, Stefan MacNeil and Brad Dorion, the inaugural Mermaid Comedy on March 16 delivered the goods. The show opened with comedy from Ryan Beil and Taz VanRassel of the improv group The Sunday Service. Those who have checked out their weekly show at the Fox Cabaret will recognize their unique (and always entertaining) back and forth.

The show’s three very charming creators each did a great stand-up set, as did the local guests Steve McGowan and Stuart Jones. Headliners were eligible bachelor Ivan Decker, and the fabulously quick-witted Erica Sigurdson, who both delighted the room with their very relatable material. The final comic, a last minute addition, was Simon King, whose negative tirade of a set closed the otherwise excellent show with unfortunate tension.

Overall, the show was a great start to the new era of laughs at Railway. The next show, coming up on April 6, features local comics Kyle Bottom, Jacob Samuel, Jenny Toews, Katie-Ellen Humphries, Sophie Buddle and members of the Sunday Service once again.
