Men of Vancouver (MofV) is a new bi-monthly editorial featuring the most stylish men in Vancouver. Style by Sarai recently interviewed Jason Noel for this exclusive in-depth photo editorial.

What do you do for a living?
By day, I’m a Public Servant and by night I’m a CrossFit coach and athlete at Studeo55 CrossFit in Vancouver.

How would you describe your style when it comes to fashion?
Hip. Simple. Clean. Very little effort. Affordable.

Who’s style do you like amongst athletes and celebrities?
At the moment I’m kinda liking the whole NBA hipsters thing. Guys like Russell Westbrook, Kevin Durant and Lebron are really having fun with fashion.

What about Michael Jordan?
I’m a huge MJ fan and the man can do no wrong in my eyes despite some of his latest fashion decisions. He also has enough money to make me disappear so I will refrain from commenting further.

SWEET CHERUBIM | 1105 Commercial Drive, Vancouver

Where do you shop for groceries?
I try not to stockpile food and just buy what I need for the week. We are so lucky in the Lower Mainland because we have many local grocers to choose from. I’m a big fan of Sweet Cherubim because when you buy local you get fresher, better tasting produce and there is way less environmental impacts.

When it comes to meat/seafood I go wild or free range, grass fed whenever possible. Lately, I’ve been going to Windsor Meats in Mackenzie Heights and they have a wicked selection of free range, hormone and antibiotic free meats to choose from, and it’s very affordable. It bugs me when people equate “healthy” choices with being expensive. It’s not true.

I wish I could raise my own chickens in my condo but I don’t think the strata would be too pleased.

What do you typically eat? Do you follow a certain diet?
I try not to be too neurotic when it comes to food. I tend to live by the 80/20 food rule which means 80 percent of the time I eat very healthy and typically follow a paleo diet which comprises mainly of fruits, vegetables, lean meats, oils, nuts and seeds and a little bit of starch. The other 20 percent, well let’s just say it not completely clean. I do indulge.

If you had 20 minutes to make dinner what would make?
My go to meal is ground buffalo, mashed yams and half of an avocado. I usually fry the ground buffalo with olive oil, onions, salt and pepper. I steam the yams in the vegetable steamer and mash them after with a bit of butter. It’s a perfect combination for protein, healthy carbs and good fats.

| Great Northern Way, Vancouver

How do you fit in time to manage your career, fitness and personal life?
To me it’s simple, my health is the number one priority and it’s not negotiable. Quite often the excuses people use, as reasons not to be healthy are in fact the exact reasons why they should be.

How do you bring style to fitness?
I’m somewhat superstitious and if my training gear is not on point I know I’m not going to have a good workout. Lately I’ve been training in Strike Movement because their gear is legit. It’s nice when a company of active, fit people make clothes for active people. They’ve done their homework and have bridged the gap between technical athletic apparel and clean trendy design. I personally feel everyone should subscribe to the “look good, train good” philosophy and own at least five pairs of gym shoes.

Exercise everyone needs to do more of?
Squats and pull ups. It’s a tie.

Exercise everyone needs to do less of?
Long cardio efforts in the gym.

Toughest workout you’ve done recently?
Honestly, the simplest looking workouts are usually the toughest. I did a workout, which involved 15 minutes of 15 heavy Kettle Bell swings and 15 Burpees, it was gross. If you complete 10+ rounds, you are a beast.

CAFFÈ CITTADELLA
| 2310 Ash Steert, Vancouver

How did you hear about Caffè Cittadella?
It was right around the corner from a CrossFit gym I used to train at. We would often go there before workouts when we needed that little extra “buzz”.

What are your indulgences?
Well I have a sweet tooth, but I do my best to keep it quality. My favorites are the raw raspberry cake from Sweet Cherubim, the coconut macaroon from Whole Foods, and the silky fudge cream cheese brownie from Caffè Cittadella. When I can’t decide, I usually get all three…joking.

THANKS, JASON NOEL, FOR BEING A STYLISH MAN IN VANCOUVER!
