It's time to make an ethical choice with your morning coffee

Making choices in your everyday life that have a positive impact on the world is way easier than you think. Although it might not seem like it, small, consistent changes are the ones that matter.

From the decision you make about how you get to work, to the way you run your household, every thoughtful change counts.

But it’s something even smaller than that, that could be making a huge impact. Your morning coffee. Or midday coffee. (Or any time of day really, we don’t judge.)

Let’s be honest: Canadians love their coffee. And according to a recent study, Canadians drink on average three cups of coffee per day. Now that’s a lot of coffee.

And you know what else Canadians love? The McCafé coffee experience.

To help Canadians feel even better about their coffee choice, McDonald’s Canada has used its influence and scale to help ensure a sustainable future for coffee — and more importantly, our environment. After all, coffee farming accounts for the livelihoods of over 125 million people worldwide, most of whom work on small family-owned farmed in developing countries.

It’s important to be aware of where our daily brew comes from and to be conscious of the well-being of farms, as well as the natural environment.

McCafé coffee beans are now the first to be 100% Rainforest Alliance (RFA) Certified™. This means that they’re ethically and sustainably sourced, which helps to protect forests, conserve wildlife, and support communities around the world.

McDonald’s Canada has been on a journey towards becoming more sustainable, as part of an overarching goal to reduce its environmental footprint.

The future of coffee requires ethical sourcing both where coffee is produced and how it is purchased — namely, in a way that respects farmers, as well as supports sustainable farming methods that emphasize the preservation of future generations’ ability to farm.

The Rainforest Alliance is an international non-profit organization working to ensure the long-term well-being of farm communities, forests, and wildlife. Rainforest Alliance Certified farms help protect soil, waterways, wildlife habitats, and the rights of workers, their families, and their communities.

Miguel Zamora, Director of Core Markets, Rainforest Alliance says, “Having a partner like McDonald’s and the McCafé brand is a meaningful way to help educate Canadians about how their coffee is grown and how everyday choices can make a difference.”

This means by choosing McCafé coffee, you’re choosing to make a positive impact on people and the planet.

“Canadians are looking for brands to take a leadership role in making positive changes in the industry, and we’re listening to that,” says Catherine Crozier, Senior Director, McCafé Strategy, Marketing & Brand Innovation.

With their coffee, McDonald’s is committed to bringing about an increase in forest quality, as well as an increase in training, household incomes, and education for those on Rainforest Alliance Certified farms. It’s time to feel good about enjoying your next cup of morning coffee — and you can do this by choosing McCafé!

Look out for the Rainforest Alliance Certified™ seal on McCafé hot beverage cups, which will also appear on all in-restaurant McCafé products, such as the 100% ethically-sourced Arabica beans in all coffee products that include Specialty Iced and Hot brewed coffee.
