McDavid and Draisaitl crash beer league game in Ontario and were held pointless

Edmonton Oilers forwards Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl didn’t waste much time jumping back into game action.

Despite the dynamic duo suiting up in the Stanley Cup Final one month ago, both hit the ice in Newmarket, Ont., for a game yesterday. That said, this one didn’t exactly have the pace of an NHL outing.

Instead, this was a beer league outing, one in which you would imagine that two of the game’s greatest players would dominate. That was far from the case, however, as both superstars were held off the scoresheet entirely and lost the outing by a 6-2 final.

Despite the fact that neither player put up much of a show, it was still a very cool moment for everybody else taking part in the game, including the referees.

“Really cool to be on the ice with them. Just kind of starstruck at the end of the day as well,” one of the officials said afterward.

There were whispers earlier in the day that the Oilers forwards would play in this game, resulting in plenty of kids heading to the rink to take it all in. While they didn’t get to see the offence they expected, they did see some outstanding chances for McDavid, and some even better saves from the opposing goalie.

While one would imagine this is a one-and-done type situation for McDavid and Draisaitl this summer, the fact that they lost and weren’t able to put up any points may be enough to motivate them to head back for one more game. Either way, this was a very cool situation, and one that every other player and referee who took part in will never forget.
