Featuring the 10th Annual Spot Prawn Festival, exclusive sushi making classes, and a series of longtable dinners, Vancouver’s food events calendar for May is sprinkled with a number of fun food-focused outings.

We’ve complied a list, which we will keep adding to, of upcoming food-related events happening in the city this May.

Sushi and the City

Sushi and the City” invites you to attend an exclusive two-hour sushi and sashimi making class with Charlie Lee, a master sushi chef who was trained by two-Michelin-starred sushi chef Matsumoto Mizuho. In this unique class, attendees will learn the how to make restaurant quality sushi and sashimi using the latest techniques in Japanese gastronomy.

Sunday Paella Series at Boulevard

Boulevard Kitchen & Oyster Bar will continue their ongoing Sunday Supper Series this spring when Executive Chef Alex Chen conjures up the rustic flavours of Spain’s national dish with a string of events featuring Paella as the centrepiece.

When: Every Sunday in May (1,8,15,22,29), from 6 p.m.

Eat, Grow, & Love Local Longtable Series

This is the third in a series of monthly Eat, Grow, & Love Local themed Longtable events, presented by Rocky Mountain Flatbread. Learn about the wonders of bees, how to create a bee friendly garden, and how edible flowers add beauty and flavour to sweet and savory recipes. This will be followed by a four-course dinner featuring foods from B.C. farms, forests, and oceans, and will be paired with honey-infused cocktails from a local distillery.

After Hours at Vancouver Aquarium

Ever wondered what it would be like to wander around the Vancouver Aquarium after dark? Now is your chance to do so. The Vancouver Aquarium is hosting an adults-only After Hours event, where attendees can grab a beer or glass of wine and enjoy access to all the galleries while exploring the Aquarium after dark.

When: Thursday, May 5 from 6 to 10 p.m.

Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea at Shangri-La Hotel

Those looking to spoil Mom with a memorable foodie experience can do so at the Shangri-La Hotel, Vancouver. The downtown hotel is set to host a specially-crafted afternoon tea on the sixth floor heated outdoor terrace. Executive Chef Ken Nakano and his team of talented pastry chefs will create a lavish afternoon tea tower, featuring a mix of sweet and savoury items.

Dram Come True — A Whisky Fundraiser

Join the Vancouver Writers Fest for an evening of scotch tastings in luxurious surroundings. Now in its 14th year, A Dram Come True offers aficionados, modest fans, and the uninitiated alike the opportunity to taste whisky from dozens of distilleries across the globe, with varieties curated by The President of the West Coast Whisky Society.

Donnelly Group Spot Prawn Boils

With Spot Prawn Season just around the corner, Donnelly Group is pleased to celebrate the signature B.C. catch with its third annual series of Prawn Boil dinners. The New Oxford and The Blackbird Public House will each host their own Southern-style seafood boils, serving up helpings of seasoned prawns and veggies from the pot onto newspaper covered tables.

10th Annual Spot Prawn Festival & Boil

Get ready to get your fill of B.C.’s favourite seasonal seafood: Spot Prawns. The 10th annual Spot Prawn Festival & Boil will take place Sunday, May 15, along the False Creek Fisherman’s Wharf. Limited tickets to the boil are $17.50 (plus taxes and fees). Entry to the festival is free.

Tasting Plates

Presented by Richard Wolak (a.k.a. Vancouver Foodster) Tasting Plates is an event series of culinary roving tours taking place in different areas of the city, featuring a multitude of different ethnic restaurants. On May 18 attendees will get the chance to eat a variety of foods and mingle with fellow foodies within the East Village neighborhood, in the Hastings area from Clark to Renfrew.

Timber Supper & Cask Night

Timber is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Spot Prawn Festival with a Spot Prawn and Seafood boil. The restaurant won’t be selling tickets, nor will they be taking reservations. Diners interested in attending the cook-up are encouraged to simply turn up to the Robson Street eatery.

When: Thursday, May 19 from 6 p.m.
Where: Timber, 1300 Robson Street
Price: For $59 diners will get a pint of a special cask from a local craft brewery and a full plate of Timber’s Spot Prawn and Seafood boil for supper

Cooking Skills Series: Eat Your Veggies!

If you’re looking to expand your cooking repertoire make sure you register for Tartine & Maple’s cooking class, which focuses on unique ways to prepare veggies. Led by the talented Valentine Kitamura, owner of Tartine & Maple and baker at The Uncommon Café, the class will demonstrate how to make Beet Soup, a Spring Fresh Salad, Parsnip and Carrot Fries, and a Chickpea and Tomato Stew.

Gastown Chicken Fight

A collection of Gastown restaurants are coming together to compete in a whisky inspired wing cook-off. A mix of judges scores and audience voting will determine which team has created the most delicious, awesome, whisky-flavoured wings.

Prepare Your Business For Success

Foodies who are planning on launching a business or turing their Farmers’ Market stall into a retail location will want to attend this two-day course led by Andrea Gray-Grant and Yan-Yan Lee from Good to Grow. The duo support food start-ups with business planning, marketing, package regulations, financial strategy, and more.

Railtown Tailgate Summer BBQ Series

In celebration of the warmer weather Railtown Cafe has re-launched their street side Tailgate Summer BBQ Series. On May 28, Railtown Cafe’s chefs and co-owners Dan Olson and Tyler Day will fire up their custom-built, 12-foot smoker/barbecue barrel from 4 to 10 p.m and dish up heaping plates of 35-hour Texas-style slow-smoked brisket, applewood pork shoulder, beer-brined Fraser Valley chicken, jalapeño cornbread, plus a choice of enticing side plates, which include creamy potato salad and Farmers’ Market field greens.

Bend & Brunch

CRAFT Beer Market is partnering up with YYoga, Stanley Park Brewing, and True Buch Kombucha for a one-of-a-kind morning event in support of Covenant House Vancouver. Bring your own yoga mat for a one yoga class held on CRAFT’s back end patio and then stay for brunch. Proceeds from all ticket sales will go to support Covenant House Vancouver.
