Massive whale spotted dead in Burrard Inlet

Dec 19 2017, 11:09 pm

A large adult dead fin whale was found floating near a pier at Port Metro Vancouver in Burrard Inlet this morning.

An investigation by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans is underway, but preliminary findings indicate the whale was struck by the cruise ship vessel Seven Seas Navigator north of Vancouver Island and dragged into Vancouver harbour.

The whale was tethered to the pier after it was found. It has since been towed away to a Seaspan dock on the North Vancouver waterfront to allow officials to perform a necropsy. The results of the examination will be made available in two weeks.

In January, a dead gray whale was found rotting under Seattle’s Pier 48. A similar incident also occurred in 2009 when the Princess Cruise Lines’ Sapphire Princess pulled into the dock at Canada Place with a 16-metre long fin whale carcass wedged between the bow and hull of the vessel.
