UPDATE: The warning for residents in Squamish to stay indoors was lifted Friday morning at 7 a.m. Schools in the area will be open Friday but children will remain inside. They are no reports of injuries and all terminal workers have been accounted for.

EARLIER:

A massive fire has broken out at Squamish Terminals, a deep water port in Howe Sound.

The fire reportedly broke out just after 6:30 p.m. this evening. A thick plume of smoke is billowing out of the edge of the water, obscuring much of Howe Sound.

According to reports, flames quickly spread across the terminal facility but all vessels were able to flee the port without attaining major damage.

Port workers were quickly evacuated from the site and residents in the area have been told to head indoors and close windows. The smoke may be toxic as the source of the fire is believed to be from pilings containing creosote, a carcinogenic chemical.

It is unclear whether anyone is injured.

Local fire crews and Coast Guard vessels, including a hovercraft from the Richmond base, have arrived at the scene and a Vancouver Fire Rescue fireboat has been deployed to assist federal responders.
