Marvel Studios releases Phase 3 film slate; Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Avengers: Infinity War (Video)

President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige gave a massive press event at the EL Capitan theater on Tuesday morning in Hollywood to reveal Marvel’s Phase 3 film plans through 2019.

Avengers director Joss Weadon, Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson and Captain America 2 and 3 helmers the Russo brothers were all in attendance along with over 600 fans eagerly awaiting the Phase 3 news.

 

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR – May 6, 2016

Feige began by confirming film release dates for Captain America 3: Civil War on May 6 2016  and newly pushed release date for Doctor Strange on November 4 2016.

Civil War will take place after the events of Avengers 2: Age of Ultron. After the world has been affected deeply by Ultron’s reign of terror that Tony himself creates, the government enacts a superhero registration act that would have all meta humans working as government agents. The act divides the Marvel Universe into two sides with Tony Stark leading a group who is for the act and Captain America leading the others who are against it.

DOCTOR STRANGE – NOVEMBER 4, 2016

Doctor Strange tells the story of Stephen Strange, a very talented and ego driven surgeon. When an a car accident cripples his hands, he makes a deal with The Ancient One to heal them. Instead he trains Stephen to become master of the mystic arts and the Sorcerer Supreme of Earth. He is regarded as one of the most powerful magical characters Marvel has.

 

 GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 – MAY 5, 2017

He then continued by announcing Guardians of the Galaxy 2 which will see James Gunn returning to the directors chair on May 7 2017, followed by Thor 3: Ragnorok slated for July 28 2017. Finishing off the year will be Black Panther with a film release date for November 3 2017. Marvel also announced that Chadwick Boseman (42, Get On Up) will be playing the title character.

 

THOR: RAGNAROK – JULY 28, 2017

In the comic books, Ragnarok ties into the Civil War storyline as well as other Thor stories. Tony creates a cyborg clone of Thor to help battle anti-registration heroes in Civil War but Ragnarok also means Judgement Day in norse mythology. It is speculated that they will follow a similar story in the Thor comics where Loki releases the ancient demon Surtur who together, try bring about Ragnarok and end all of the nine realms.

 

BLACK PANTHER – NOVEMBER 3, 2017

Black Panther will open up the cinematic universe to Wakanda, the most prominent of several fictional African nations in the Marvel Universe and also the most technologically advanced. T’Challa was the former King of Wakanda but decided to use his powers, abilities and resources for the betterment of mankind.

 

CAPTAIN MARVEL – JULY 6, 2018/ INHUMANS – NOVEMBER 6, 2018

Moving into 2018, Feige kept the ball rolling by announcing Marvel’s first female lead film with Captain Marvel for July 6 2018. That will then be followed by yet another group focused film titled The Inhumans for November 2 2018.

 

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR PART 1 – MAY 2018/ PART 2 – MAY 2019

Finally, finishing of Marvel’s Phase 3 will be another Avengers film titled Avengers: Infinity War, which will be broken up into 2 parts with Part 1 being released on May 4th 2018 and Part 2 in May 2019. This film will finally see big baddie Thanos come into the spotlight. Infinity War refers to the Infinity Gauntlet, a golden glove that when has all 6 infinity stones, becomes the most powerful weapon in the universe. Infinity stones have been mentioned in Guardians of the Galaxy and has been revealed through out the other films.
