Marukatsu Cuisine concept pops up in Vancouver's Gyoza Bar

A new spot for Japanese-Mexican food has just arrived in Vancouver: Marukatsu Cuisine.

The concept has popped up inside the Aburi Restaurants’ Gyoza Bar in downtown Vancouver at 622 West Pender Street.

Marukatsu offers patrons a selection of fusion eats that combine Japanese katsu with Mexican ingredients in dishes like burritos and bowls, alongside comfort eats like curry and teishoku, a Japanese set meal.

Founder and CEO of Aburi Restaurants Canada, Seigo Nakamura, says he first conceptualized Marukatsu five years ago in Tokyo.

“Fast-casual food concepts were also on the rise, so we created a unique and innovative way to deliver high quality, efficiently prepared Japanese cuisine beyond takeaway sushi and donburi,” says Nakamura.

“You’ll be surprised how well Japanese and Mexican flavours unexpectedly work together, we are thrilled to offer this innovative new menu at our limited-time Marukatsu pop-up.”

Marukatsu’s deep-fried cutlets are made with specialty nama-panko to ensure folks get that satisfying crispy crunch with every bite.

Menu highlights include the Marukatsu Burrito made with either pork or chicken katsu, coleslaw, mixed beans, butter rice, sour cream, grand padano cheese, and basil onion sauce, and the Marukatsu Bowl with the same choice of proteins and basil onion pesto, tonkatsu sauce, sour cream, pico de gallo, and grand padano cheese, microgreens, and steamed rice.
