Finally after multiple revisions, scaled back height, rentals and office space the Marine Gateway project got the go ahead from city council. For those of you unfamiliar with this development it is adjacent to the Canada Line station at Marine and Cambie.
There will be 3 towers in total, the tallest will have a height of 335 feet. There will be a total of 460 residential suites of which 50 or so will be allotted for affordable rental housing. There will also be restaurants, shops, and a movie theatre. The movie theatre is desperately need as the closest one at Oakridge is closing to make way for Vancouver’s first Crate & Barrel.
Local resident opposition was fierce for this one and I can see why. This is the largest development in the city outside the downtown core. I for one think it’s about time the city start building and adding density around transit stations. That’s just smart urban planning. With the Cambie Corridor rezoning approved the future of Marine and Cambie will look more like this.
With on average 7,000 people (14,000 last year as per BC estimates) moving to Vancouver every year and no new land, they have to live some where. It’s time the rest of Vancouver start moving up.
