A woman in Maple Ridge had quite the fright on Tuesday night when a man allegedly wielding a knife surprised her by popping out of the backseat of her vehicle.
According to a release by Ridge Meadows RCMP, the incident occurred at approximately 11:20 pm at Valley Fair shopping centre in the 22700 block of Lougheed Highway. As the female was driving her SUV into the mall’s parking lot, the man popped up from the backseat, surprised the woman, and caused her to crash the vehicle into a parked car.
The female got out of the vehicle and ran off westbound towards 227 Street. Police efforts to locate the man included the use of a police dog, but they were unable to locate the suspect.
“The victim was not physically attacked or injured, but the suspect had possession of a knife and disguised his face, which is very concerning,” said Corporal Brenda Winpenny in a statement. “Investigators believe the suspect’s intentions were criminal in nature and police are asking the public to be vigilant when getting into their vehicles. Police do believe this suspect poses a risk to public safety, and there is an increased urgency to identify this male.”
Police have described the suspect as a Caucasian male, between the ages of 20 and 30, approximately 5 foot 7 to 10 inches tall with an athletic build, and weighing about 170 pounds. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a dark shirt, dark coloured shorts, a disguise over his head, and had no shoes.
“Investigators are asking for anyone who witnessed this incident and have not spoken with police to call,” continued Winpenny.
