Man opens SkyTrain car door on Millennium Line, road blockage on Broadway stalls 99 B-Line and trolleys

It was an eventful day on Metro Vancouver’s public transit system due to issues on SkyTrain and a road blockage on West Broadway.

There were scheduled delays on the Millennium Line today to accommodate Evergreen Line construction needs. The one station span between Lougheed and Production Stations is running single track throughout the day so that construction can be performed on the new track switch that will connect the Evergreen Line to the Millennium Line.

As a result, there were some minor scheduled delays to allow for track work to be done. However, just before 11 a.m., one impatient man who was on a Millennium Line train that had stopped for just a few minutes decided to open the car doors and run on the tracks.

It caused systemwide delays to both the Expo and Millennium Lines as staff had to walk to the stalled train, shut the door and manually drive the vehicle back to the station.

Transit riders are advised to not open train doors and walk on the tracks without SkyTrain attendant permission and supervision. Such an act not only creates more delays but is illegal and considered mischief. It is also a safety hazard as tracks are electrified and trains can begin to move at anytime without warning.

Meanwhile on West Broadway, at 1 p.m. a stalled bus blocked the road near Arbutus Street and caused lengthy delays to the 99 B-Line and trolley routes.

99 B-Line buses were rerouted to West 4th via MacDonald Street before returning to Broadway at Fir Street. Some Broadway trolley routes terminated at Granville Street. Riders reported delays of more than 40 minutes.

The road was partially cleared by 3 p.m. and buses returned to their normal routes, but some delays still resume as buses are off their normal schedules.
