One man has been arrested for attempted murder and a second man is recovering in hospital following an early morning stabbing in the Downtown Eastside.

Around midnight, a police officer was flagged down at East Hastings Street near Jackson for a report of a man who had been stabbed in the neck.

The officer found a 41-year-old man suffering from serious stab wounds. The officer rendered immediate first aid to control the bleeding. Paramedics were called and the man was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries. He underwent surgery and remains in hospital in stable condition.

Police were able to locate surveillance video that showed a possible suspect in the stabbing.

At around 2:00 a.m., police responded to a report of a man in the area of Jackson Street and Alexander who had also been stabbed. When police arrived, they found a 22-year-old man who appeared to be suffering from a self-inflicted knife wound, and who matched the description of the suspect from the earlier East Hastings Street stabbing.

Charges have not yet been laid in the case.
