This Friday, on the first day of summer, over 150 musicians and bands will be performing in the heart of Gastown showcasing Vancouver’s incredible local musical talent and the power of community. On June 21 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., Water Street will be shut down to traffic and host one of the largest outdoor urban music festivals in the city. The historic district’s cobblestone streets will be transformed into sidewalk stages and dance floors!
Make Music Vancouver is an entirely free live music celebration open to everyone to come and enjoy music, dancing and festivities in the streets of Gastown. All the organizers and musicians are volunteers, donating their time and skills for the love of music. Our goal with Make Music Vancouver is to create engagement within the community on a multitude of levels – including an appreciation of arts and culture, opportunities to give back to the community and environmental awareness.
The second Vancouver edition of Make Music was held last year, bringing over 25,000 spectators to the streets of Gastown. These are some photo highlights of last year’s performers providing a glimpse of the event’s atmosphere.
Following last year’s success, Make Music Vancouver stays green!
With tens of thousands expected to occupy the streets, we continue to take measures ensuring that Make Music Vancouver is easy on the planet; we will be providing visitors with the tools they need to lessen their ecological footprint while they enjoy the music.
Events can sometimes produce a lot of waste and greenhouse gasses and we want to ensure that Make Music Vancouver has a positive impact on the community in every way possible.
Bike Valet Service
At the event, we will be offering a free, secure, coat-check style bike valet service courtesy of The Bicycle Valet. Our bike park will be conveniently located at the end of the Carrall Street bike lane, at the junction with Water Street and Alexander Street. The bike park will be open from 5 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Cyclists won’t even need to bring a lock – they can just drop off their bike and go enjoy the music.
Recycling Stations that will be accepting just about everything
The people at Recycling Alternative are local pioneers in the industry who have been reducing waste in our city since 1989. With their help, we’ll be recycling a lot more than the usual suspects like refundable beverage containers and paper. We will be composting ALL food as well as food-soiled napkins and paper plates. We will also be recycling all containers, not just refundables, including hard and soft plastics. This will help to ensure that almost nothing from our event goes to the landfill.
