Made and Perched in Chinatown--New exhibitions by Vancouver Design Bureau

Dec 19 2017, 7:40 am

Urban renewal has brought a jolt of energy to Vancouver’s historic Chinatown. It is now home to many new independent businesses and cultural organizations that were once considered out of place in the neighbourhood. As both new and old inhabitants embrace the burgeoning amalgamation of cultures, the question of modernization vs preservation with the development of Chinatown remains open ended. Inspired by this ongoing conversation, Vancouver Design Bureau (VDB) [1], a local design collective, has put together an exhibition called _Made In China(town)_ at Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden [2] (on view from now until June 29th).

Many of the designers in the collective have studios situated in Chinatown, implicating them as stakeholders in the changing face of the neighbourhood. The exhibition allows the designers to respond to the revitalization in the area using product and graphic design. Works on display include a modernized Chinese folding chair, pictogram silkscreen posters, and The DJ Trike [3]’s pedal-powered sound system.

_Made in China(town)_ is intended to discuss and develop the varying perspectives on the issue. The public is invited to share their thoughts at the opening reception on June 8th from 5 to 7pm at the Garden. With complementary admissions to the event, guests can also enjoy _Perched in Chinatown_, a site-specific installation of nine unique birdhouses from VDB’s inaugural exhibition that engages with the architectural and horticultural elements of the Garden. If you can’t make it to the opening, join the design collective for an Instagram scavenger hunt [4], June 15that 2pm, and discover the hidden gems in the Garden!
