Star Wars Episode 7 officially started shooting a couple weeks ago and are still releasing more casting news. Lupita Nyongo (12 Years a Slave) and Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones) have been announced by Lucas Film as the latest actors to join the cast on this history in the making project. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy had this to say about the announcement.
“I could not be more excited about Lupita and Gwendoline joining the cast of Episode VII. It’s thrilling to see this extraordinarily talented ensemble taking shape.”
This is a welcome addition to a very male heavy cast so far. So I guess all those critics who have been asking where the women are in this production just got their answer. I for one am so excited for this news. I loved Lupita in 12 Years a Slave and Gwendoline’s character Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones is such a strong, well written female character, I would love to see their fame continue to elevate and push for stronger female characters on the big screen.
No information has been said yet on who these ladies will be playing in the film but they will be joining an already stellar cast with actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker.
Star Wars Episode 7 is set to be released December 18, 2015.
