Roberto Luongo seems quite thrilled to be on the same side as Brad Marchand for once.
The Florida Panthers, who have Luongo working as part of their management team, were able to complete a huge trade minutes before yesterday’s deadline, acquiring Marchand from the Boston Bruins. Though Marchand was mentioned in trade speculation, few, if any, saw him joining the Panthers.
Vancouver Canucks fans will remember the fits Marchand caused them all to well back in the 2011 Stanley Cup Final, where he scored five goals in a series that the Bruins were able to win 4-3. It’s clear that the longtime Canucks netminder remembers it vividly as well, and in typical Luongo fashion, he had a hilarious tweet shortly after yesterday’s trade was announced.

Luongo sent out a hilarious gif of Will Ferrell from the comedy special Daddy’s Home 2. It’s some incredible self-depreciating humour, with the 45-year-old seemingly having no issue poking fun at himself for Marchand getting the best of him back in 2011.
The addition of Marchand gives Luongo and the Panthers a great opportunity to win the Stanley Cup for the second-straight year. They were able to pick up their first ever championship a season ago, defeating the Edmonton Oilers in Game 7 by a 2-1 final.
Marchand is currently out with an upper-body injury, with Bruins head coach Joe Sacco deeming him week-to-week on Tuesday. While he’s no longer the 100-point player he was back in 2018-19, he’s still extremely effective, having recorded 21 goals and 47 points through 61 games on a struggling Bruins team this season.
