Lime has now expanded e-scooter share across downtown Vancouver

As of today, Lime e-scooter share has expanded across the downtown Vancouver peninsula, covering the area with an expansive network of locking docking parking stations equipped with the mobility devices.

There are now 28 stations in the city centre, which brings Lime’s total e-scooter share network size in Vancouver to 525 devices across 98 stations. Lime first announced its downtown expansion earlier this spring.

This network and fleet size is significantly up from the 29 stations and 100 e-scooters when Lime first launched in late Summer 2025.

Vancouver is Lime’s first and only service area in the world where there are stations that require riders to use the app to unlock and relock a device for each trip they make.

Unlike the micro-mobility giant’s other markets elsewhere in the world, which are based on a free-floating system where riders merely park their devices within a marked area, the custom-designed Vancouver solution of using locking docking parking stations aims to greatly improve safety and reduce the likelihood of the clutter of the devices in public spaces.

Locking docking parking stations were a requirement of the City of Vancouver’s previous bidding process that led to the selection of Lime as the e-scooter share operator. Within the city centre, the stations are generally found on the curbside vehicle parking spaces, with the company paying a fee for the use of this space, including covering lost pay parking revenues.

“Lime’s expansion into downtown is here just in time for summer. This shared e-scooter system will add even more sustainable transportation options to get you to your favourite downtown beaches, businesses, events and more,” said Mayor Ken Sim in a statement.

Sonia Kandola, Senior Director of Government Relations at Lime, added, “Lime is proud to bring our best-in-class micromobility solutions to Vancouver, helping residents and visitors connect with the city in a more convenient way. As part of this launch, we’re doubling down on our commitment to safety by partnering with a local business to remind riders to always wear a helmet while providing a fun, rider-focused experience.

As of now, ever since Lime launched its first e-scooter share service area within the northeast corner of the city in September 2024 — in the Hastings-Sunrise and Grandview-Woodland neighbourhoods — it has recorded over 10,000 unique riders and more than 75,000 trips.

This past winter, the company expanded the service area into the Strathcona and Mount Pleasant areas.

From the outset, Lime made it clear that it intends to expand its e-scooter share service across every neighbourhood and district in Vancouver.

“We’re excited to keep growing across the city, helping Vancouverites connect with the people and places that matter most—and supporting Vancouver’s vision for a greener future,” continued Kandola.

Lime holds an initial five-year contract with the City of Vancouver, which can be renewed for three additional five-year terms for a total of up to 20 years.

The company already operates e-scooter and e-bike share services for Coquitlam and Richmond. It also operates e-bike share services in the District of West Vancouver, the District of North Vancouver, the City of North Vancouver, and the Squamish Nation’s reserves.

In August 2024, under a partnership with the City of New Westminster, Lime launched an e-bike share service in the downtown New Westminster and Uptown areas.

In order to use Lime’s e-scooter share services, riders must be at least 18 years old, wear a helmet, and follow a maximum speed limit of 25 km/h. Under Vancouver’s bylaws, e-scooters are permitted on the roadways of all city streets with speed limits of 50 km/h and under (not pedestrian sidewalks), bike lanes, bikeways, greenways, and seawall and park paths where bikes are allowed.

The e-scooter devices are also programmed to detect slow zones, no-ride zones, and sidewalk use, as well as a training mode. Shared reusable helmets are attached to each e-scooter, with pre-ride helmet photo selfies use the app being a requirement.

Lime is now providing Vancouver’s existing Mobi bike share service with some competition in the shared micro-mobility market, especially where demand is highest — in and around the downtown peninsula.

Meanwhile, just in time for summer, Mobi bike share has temporarily expanded its services to Spanish Banks Beach with a bike share station now situated at this location, which is a partnership with TransLink and the City of Vancouver. It will remain in place until the end of September 2023.
