LG 104.3 launches vanCOVER, giving local musicians chance to win prizes and perform live
LG 104.3 is giving local musicians the chance to re-interpret the Greatest Hits of the ’70s and ’80s with vanCOVER, a program designed to support the growth and development of artists in Vancouver’s music community. Building on the success of the station’s previous program Best of BC, LG 104.3 is encouraging bands to submit their best covers of popular songs from the 70s and 80s for a chance to win monthly prizes and the opportunity to play live at a premier music venue in the city.
“LG 104.3 wanted to shine the spotlight on the amazing musical talent in this city, and share it through original performances of some of the best music ever made,” said Larry Hennessey, host of LG 104.3 Mornings with Larry. “Some of the biggest songs of the 70s and 80s were covers – Phil Collins’ take on The Supreme’s You Can’t Hurry Love, Billy Idol brought Mony Mony to the 80s and Eric Clapton was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for his cover of Bob Marley’s I Shot The Sherriff.”
Competing for a monthly prize of $5,000 (first place) or $1,000 (second place), bands will cover hits by popular artists like Michael Jackson, The Police, The Rolling Stones, Billy Joel and U2. A major highlight of vanCOVER is the live quarterly showcase events LG 104.3 will be hosting, where select vanCOVER bands will perform alongside local celebrity guest headliners.
“Artists involved in the project will have a chance to play at some of the hottest venues in Vancouver and the showcases are going to be fun theme nights, built around the hits that LG 104.3 listeners grew listening to,” said Taylor Jukes, LG 104.3 Program Director.
LG 104.3 is recognizing the thrill and importance of radio play and live performance, with vanCOVER, the latest program in this station’s long tradition of delivering support for emerging Canadian artists.
