Former Leafs defenceman Kaberle now delivering food for wife's restaurant

Tomas Kaberle has gone from puck-moving defenceman to food-moving delivery driver.

Kaberle, who played 15 years in the NHL with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Carolina Hurricanes, and Montreal Canadiens, is doing what he can to help his wife, who owns Quanto Basta restaurant in Toronto.

Given the current state of affairs for restaurant owners in most of the world, Kaberle’s wife, Julia, asked for her famous husband’s help.

“I happened to be sitting at the restaurant with my wife and deciding what to do after COVID-19 started,” Kaberle said in a CBC Radio interview with Carol Off. “We’re sitting down at the restaurant, and between the chef and one girl who’s going to do the delivering and all the ordering, it got busy. I said, I don’t mind helping out.”

With the Italian restaurant trying to survive on takeout and delivery, Kaberle has been thrust into action.

Needless to say, Kaberle’s arrival at homes around the city has surprised a number of customers who remember him well from his 12 seasons with the Maple Leafs.

“It’s fun,” said Kaberle, who added that the restaurant now has repeat customers asking for him. “If I can make them laugh at this time, so whatever it takes. So it’s good.”
