This Vancouver brunch is pastry and champagne heaven (PHOTOS)

When it comes to brunch, innovative plating and savvy food presentation are cool and all, but sometimes we just crave a good ol’ fashioned fresh pastry basket, and that’s why L’Abattoir has stolen our carb-loving hearts.
While most brunch services have epic eats such as chicken and waffles or pulled pork-topped mega flapjacks as the central dish on their menus, L’Abattoir offers a simple and satisfying Seasonal Pastry basket, and it can’t really be described as anything other than beautiful…even sublime if you’re really into baked goods (which we are).

Underrated and often overlooked on many menus, we’d happily trade in our classic eggs bennies and yogurt parfaits for a slew pastries (which yes, are as big as they look) from this chic eatery serving French inspired West Coast dishes, located in the heart of Gastown.
A destination for brunchers from across Metro Vancouver, L’Abattoir offers brunch service every Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 2 pm. There are also reservations available here, so we can confirm we’ll be deep within the fritters in the land of pastries this weekend.

The Seasonal Pastry Basket changes frequently – meaning you’ll have to come back more than once – but current options include Meyer lemon and poppyseed bear claws, sticky buns, sugary doughnuts, scones, and fruit-filled danishes.

Other treats to satiate that sweet tooth of yours include the precious and pretty Buttermilk and Ricotta Pancakes topped with with pears, whipped mascarpone, and smoked maple syrup, and the house-baked scone with jam and clotted cream – right now it’s currant – but this changes regularly as well.

If sugars not your thing, don’t worry, Chef Lee Cooperâs got you covered with savoury offerings including a Country Style PatĂ©, Poached eggs with smoked pork belly, a Goat cheese tartine, Steak and Eggs, Pacific Octopus and a Full Breakfast of two eggs, duck sausage, pork and beans, boudin noir, rösti, and toast to name just a few.
Meat lover? You’ve got to sink your teeth into the Breakfast Burger – a layered morning delight that features a hashbrown patty on a fried egg on a quarter pound patty – yeah, we’re drooling too.

If you need to turn things up a notch, say there’s a celebration or you’re looking to kick off your weekend with some hair of the dog, Bubbles at Brunch is the mid-morning meal option for you.
During this signature service brunchers can opt to enjoy one bottle (or two) of a noteworthy lineup of bubbles at special marked down prices. This spot’s bubbles list focuses on the âgrowerâ variety, which means the wines are produced by the same estate that owns the vineyards where the grapes grow.

Pop bottles of champagne such as Lanson âBlack Labelâ Brut, Pierre Paillard Pinot Poir + Bouzy Grand Cru Brut and Diebolt-Vallois âBlanc De Blancs Prestige Brutâ, French sparkling wine such as AndrĂ© & Mireille Tissot â11 Chardonnay + Extra Brut CrĂ©mant Du Hura, as well as sparkling wine from the celebrated Okanagan Valley Vineyard.
For anyone looking to wow an out-of-towner or delight a friend who has been enduring a sad, lonely pastry-less week, we recommend making a reservation here to get your brunch fill.
