Did you know? 3 Vancouver golf courses have veggie gardens

There’s a lot of green growth at Vancouver’s three city-run golf courses, and it’s not just for putting.

Fraserview, Langara, and McCleery golf courses all have herb and vegetable gardens used to grow produce for use in their clubhouse dining rooms, and it is harvest time.

The veggie gardens at Langara and McCleery just went in this spring, while Fraserview has been growing since 2012, says the City of Vancouver.

Putting gardens onto golf courses is a new thing, but the Park Board has been behind other community-oriented gardens for almost 30 years.

The golf course gardens employ sustainable gardening practices, and are part of the City’s overall green strategy.

Now up for picking for their clubhouse kitchens: peppers, arugula, chives, and kale, among other veggies.

Here’s a little more about the Park Board garden program:

So far in 2014, the Park Board approved eight new and expanded gardens with about 180 plots, bringing the total number of gardens on park land to 29.

All gardens are run by non-profit partners and, increasingly, managed collaboratively by gardening groups or tied into community centre programming.
