If you haven’t had the chance to take a swim at Vancouver’s iconic Kits Pool, you don’t have long before it closes down for the season.
According to the Vancouver Park Board, Kits Pool will shut down for the summer on Sept. 1, 2025, which is also when Vancouver’s other outdoor pools will close.
“Last year, Kits Pool opened later in the season (in August), so we extended its closing date slightly into September. This year it will close at the same time as the other outdoor pools, consistent with previous years,” said the Park Board in a statement to Daily Hive.
This summer, Kits Pool has been at the centre of controversy as some pool goers have vocally opposed the current reservation system.
Over the past few weeks, there has been some back-and-forth involving the reservation process.
Last month, Daily Hive spoke to the Park Board’s Dylan Myers and raised some of the concerns. But there appeared to be no plans to make any changes, because from the board’s perspective, things were running smoothly, and the reservation system also has a fair share of supporters.
Then, a motion was suddenly introduced to abolish the reservation system, but it was quickly dismissed and called “not urgent.”
On July 31, the Park Board announced it would be trialling some changes to the pool, but these were not geared towards the no-reservation system camp.
Instead, these changes were aimed at drop-in swimmers. Starting Aug. 5, the Park Board said swimmers who arrive during the final 45 minutes of a time slot at Kits Pool would be able to get a 50 per cent discount on the drop-in admission rate.
It would not apply to the reservation system or swim lessons between 7 and 8:30 a.m. These changes were also applied at Second Beach Pool, New Brighton Pool, and Maple Grove Pool.
The Park Board also said it would be expanding the time for some swim sessions.
“These changes, including the drop-in discount and the extended session at Kitsilano Pool, are intended to improve the experience for drop-in users looking to enjoy our outdoor pools this summer,” the Park Board said in a previous statement.
