19-year old Karim Meskine has succumbed to his injuries following a brutal and unprovoked attack by a 16-year old during a robbery.

The vicious beating with a baseball bat on Meskine near New Westminster Station on Tuesday, December 17, 2013 left him in a coma. He later died in hospital on Friday, December 20 – his 19th birthday.

A 16-year old young individual was arrested not long after the offence and appeared in New Westminster Courthouse on Thursday. His identity has not been released given that he is minor.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Unit will recommend charges of aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, and murder. Meskine did not know the assailant – the attack is believed to be completely random.

According to a Facebook page set-up in Meskine’s memory, his friends and family will be holding a memorial dinner at Wings Restaurant in Surrey on Monday, December 23. Everyone is welcome to attend in memoriam of Meskine.

In addition, a trust fund has been created at TD Canada Trust (branch number: 9028; account number: 6083916). Donations will go towards assisting the family with their son’s burial costs.
