Situated in a cheery park-facing storefront adjacent to the emerging Armoury District, Kahve Café opened up shop in November, serving Elysian coffee, light lunches, and tasty treats.
Kahve is the first coffee shop foray for owner Justine Rhee, who previously operated Enflux, a gift shop in West Point Grey (hence its full name Kahve Café by Enflux). Enflux is still a part of this new business venture; a portion of the coffee shop’s space is dedicated to the sale of jewelry, decor items, and housewares from European companies like Alessi, Georg Jensen, and Ittala.
When it comes to the coffee program, Rhee says they are especially proud to brew Elysian beans. After a lengthy research process of west coast coffee roasters, Rhee says Vancouver “has the best local roasters,” and Elysian’s single origin, small batch approach to roasting provides her with the product her customers really appreciate.
Kahve uses a drip brew method, on “really good equipment, which can deliver a really good result,” consistently, elaborates Rhee, adding that their espresso machine comes from a Seattle-based company, and that the café’s baristas are well-trained in weighing the beans and grounds to prepare for brewing. “I’m a firm believer in being consistent,” attests Rhee.
To pair with the carefully brewed lattes, coffees, and teas (from The Tea Guy), Kahve offers baked goods like croissant, muffins, and scones brought in fresh from Cadeaux Bakery, gluten-free treats from the “Little Home Cook,” as well as light café fare, like soup and sandwiches, made to order. Rhee says Kahve will expand their food options once they’ve been open a bit longer and can better gauge the needs of the clientele.
Kahve is located in an area that is a hub for weekday workers–who are already loving having a new coffee spot–and a weekend spot for local families to relax and convene in the nearly 1,000-square-foot shop with 16 seats (and a little 6-seat mini “patio” strip out front).
“We just want people to enjoy a nice cup of coffee while they see nice items,” adds Rhee.
The coffee shop is open 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays.
