Justin Trudeau to receive award for gender balanced cabinet

An international non-profit organization dedicated to the workplace rights of women is set to honour Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for his gender balanced cabinet.

Catalyst is giving a “special commendation” to Trudeau for his efforts in “advancing diversity and gender equality,” saying his gender equal cabinet is inspiring leaders around the world to champion women’s rights.

“His simple explanation for his actions, ‘because it’s 2015,’ has become a mantra even as we move into a new year,” reads the announcement.

Trudeau will be formally recognized at the 2016 Catalyst Awards Dinner on March 16 in New York City.

“Prime Minister Trudeau, through his intentional leadership and commitment to inclusion, sets an example that shows leaders throughout the world what is possible when they deliberately build diverse teams that reflect the marketplace and the communities they serve,” Deborah Gillis, CEO of Catalyst said in a statement.

“We commend Prime Minister Trudeau for leading by example. His actions are game changing, setting a new standard for others to follow.“

Two women in Trudeau’s cabinet are from Metro Vancouver. Vancouver-Granville MP Judy Wilson-Raybould is the Minister of Justice and Attorney General and has a long history of serving the First Nations community, being part of the We Wai Kai First Nation herself.

Delta MP Carla Qualtrough is Canada’s Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities. Qualtrough is visually impaired and competed in the 1988 and 1992 Paralympic Games for swimming.
