While many know it as the (unofficial) beer-league softball capital of the city and a wicked place to enjoy a beverage and throw the ball for your dog, Jonathan Rogers Park has now gotten a fancy new sign.
Last Friday, Stanley Q Woodvine spotted city workers hammering in the shiny new sign at the park at Manitoba Street and W 7th Avenue.
However, Woodvine suddenly wondered, without a sign, how locals even knew the park’s name.
“I almost wailed the question,” he said.
#Vancouver @ParkBoard workers tell me this is the first time Jonathan Rogers Park in Mt Pleasant has been given its own sign. "But how did we all know it was Jonathan Rogers Park?" – I almost wailed the question. A worker tapped their head in answer. pic.twitter.com/9SeqZYmk2l

According to the Vancouver Park Board, the sign is a replacement after the old sign frame and base became eroded with rust, “which can happen as a result of dog urine,” it explained.
The new sign in the southeast corner of the park is just a replacement, but this time, it has a cement base above ground.
“In the time before the new sign was installed, people likely knew it was called Jonathan Rogers Park because of the old sign, or they’d seen it on maps, the website, or heard through word of mouth etc,” the park board suggested.
The park is named after former park board commissioner and city councillor Jonathan Rogers. He died in 1945 at the age of 80.
