Vancouver sports broadcasting legend John McKeachie has passed away
One of the most beloved Vancouver sportscasters of his time has died.
John McKeachie has passed away, with his longtime colleague Bernie Pascall announcing the sad news on social media. McKeachie was 82 years old.
“Shocking news to learn of the passing of John McKeachie. John was a popular and valuable member of our BCTV Sports staff. Deepest condolences to his wife Sandi and his daughters,” said Pascall.
Born and raised in Victoria, McKeachie enjoyed a 40-year broadcast career, which included a 27-year tenure as a sports anchor on television with BCTV from 1973 to 1999. That stint included time working as an on-air host and colour commentator on Vancouver Canucks and Vancouver Whitecaps broadcasts.
McKeachie also hosted CBC Vancouver’s Hockey Night in Canada post-game show, “McKeachie’s Hockey Talk,” from 1998 to 2000, and wrote a weekly sports column for The Province newspaper from 1997 to 2000.
He held numerous jobs in radio, including Canucks and BC Lions hosting gigs with CKNW, and later Team 1040 (2001 to 2003) and Mojo Sports Radio (2003 to 2005).
Tributes are beginning to pour in on social media for McKeachie, who was well loved by his peers.

“Grew up watching John McKeachie on BCTV. Later had a chance to work with him in radio. One of one. A true character and a legend of Vancouver sports media,” added Jeff Paterson.
McKeachie was picked for the BC Hall of Fame in April of this year, and will be formally inducted in the Class of 2026 this fall.
The BC Hall of Fame noted how McKeachie was known for his “North America-wide contacts in the sports world,” “breaking big stories first in the Vancouver market,” and for his “quirky sense of humour.”
The Hall of Fame nod in the media category was overdue and well deserved. It was also an achievement he was really proud of.
“It was quite humbling, I can’t say how proud I am of it,” McKeachie said in an interview with Don Taylor and Rick Dhaliwal on April 16. “I’ve received so many texts and emails, FaceTimes and phone calls… I’m just thrilled to be a part of it.”
