B.C.'s Jim Pattison lands high on new ranking of Canada's richest people

It’s been a lucrative year for B.C. business magnate Jim Pattison, who has reportedly added nearly $1.5 billion to his respective fortune.
Maclean’s magazine just released its list of Canada’s 40 wealthiest people, and Pattison ranked 11th with an estimated net worth of $11.9 billion.
The magazine says it compiled its annual list using public records, private company valuations and some confidential information.

Pattison’s wealth is up sharply from last year, when he was estimated to have a $10.05 billion fortune.
However, his ranking has actually slipped two places, from 9th in 2024 to just out of the top 10 in 2025.
Pattison is a household name not only in B.C. but also across the country. The Vancouver-based businessman oversees a sprawling group that operates over 20 divisions, including packaging, food, and entertainment. The Jim Pattison Group owns stores like Save-On-Foods, Buy-Low Foods, Nesters Market, and Urban Fare.

He also owns iconic brands like Ripley Entertainment, Great Wolf Lodge, and Guinness World Records.
While Pattison’s name is well-known, he wasn’t the richest Vancouverite on the list.
At the top of the report is Changpeng Zhao, who was recently pardoned by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Zhao, also known as CZ, is the former CEO and co-founder of Binance, one of the world’s biggest crypto exchanges.
According to Maclean’s magazine, Zhao is the richest individual in Canada with an estimated net worth of C$91.3 billion. He spent his teen years in Vancouver before studying computer science at McGill University.
Also high on the list is Vancouver-born and raised David Cheriton. His worth is $16.3 billion, coming in at number 6.
The reason for his fortune? Cheriton invested in the then-little-known tech company Google in 1998 and has grown his net worth significantly ever since, for obvious reasons. He currently serves as chief data centre scientist at Juniper Networks.
