Jessica is the first recipient of Eastwood Onley Gallery Young Photographers Award

“I started out wanting to capture the most beautiful moments for myself, so I could go back and relive them.
I grew up in my mother’s photography studio and owned my first camera in pre-school.
My passion for photography came from capturing friends and family in candid photographs that invoke a particular mood, then transferring this process into art. Often the mood of certain situations is noted but passes by forgotten; my photos however are an attempt to freeze these moments and reflect them back to the viewer as nostalgic images invocative of a particular time. It is beauty in the ordinary, in the mundane tasks in life, which to me is very powerful. Life is in the ordinary, not in the extraordinary. To witness, capture, then preserve these times is a reminder that we all live moment to moment.

My documentary impulse has always been strong. After acquiring an educational background in film and television, I devoted several years to travel and photography; between 2004 and 2006 I visited thirteen different countries. I volunteered in orphanages and visited leper colonies in India, contacted Dangue Fever in Fiji, backpacked solo through Malaysia, and worked with Hands On Thailand to clean up Phi Phi Island after the tsunami. On return to Canada, I worked in film production in Toronto. I began as a production assistant on Degrassi: The Next Generation and Instant Star. Soon I was specializing in documentary research, working as a story coordinator on In Dreams and several other shows, as head researcher and director’s assistant on the feature film Shine of Rainbows.

“I’ll Shoot You” documentary portraiture is my first exhibit and also serves as a fundraiser for my education. I have been accepted into the Documentary Photography and Photojournalism Program at the International Center of Photography in New York City which I hope to attend in September 2010. Presently I am working as a photographer for Vancouver Magazine and recently received the first ever Eastwood Onley Young Photographer’s Award.”
