Jaywalking teen struck twice crossing North Vancouver street

A 13-year-old girl was struck by two different vehicles–one in each direction–while jaywalking across a North Vancouver street this weekend.

The unidentified teen had been crossing West Third between Lonsdale and Chesterfield Avenues at about 11:30 on the morning of Saturday, November 29, when she was struck by a westbound vehicle, then an eastbound vehicle, according to the North Vancouver RCMP.

The girl reportedly emerged from between two parked cars when she was struck by the first vehicle, adds CBC Vancouver. She was thrown into the path of the second vehicle traveling in the opposite direction.

Authorities say the drivers of both vehicles remained at the scene to cooperate with investigators. A number of witnesses also spoke with police about the incident.

Conditions at the time of the collisions were sunny and bright, but the roads were not icy, say the RCMP.

The teenager was taken to Lions Gate Hospital, then moved to B.C. Childrens Hospital, having sustained serious head injuries in the collisions.

“This is another tragic stark reminder for all pedestrians – always use the marked designated crosswalks and be alert to all vehicles,” said Cpl. Richard De Jong of the North Vancouver RCMP.
