13 Vancouver food events worth checking out this January

Featuring chocolate making classes, food truck gatherings, and the city’s annual Dine Out festival, Vancouver’s food events calendar for January is marked with a colourful mix of fun food-focused outings.

We’ve complied a list, which we will keep adding to, of upcoming food-related events happening in the city this January.

Purdy’s Truffle Making Class

If you’re looking to expand your dessert cooking repertoire, why not make a point to drop by Purdy’s South Granville location on January 5 and partake in their Truffle Making Class. Attendees will be able to choose their own flavourings, alcohol and toppings to create unique truffles in a decadent dark chocolate shell. Participants will get to take home sweet memories and a batch of 20 delicious truffles each.

When: Tuesday, January 5, from 6:30 p.m to 8:30 p.m.

Noodle Mania

This 3rd noodle tasting extravaganza is presented by Tasting Plates and Vancouver Foodster. Similar to previous year’s events, the night, for those attending, will involve visiting a handful of Vancouver restaurants. By criss-crossing the city, ticket holders will enjoy a range of noodle tasting bowls at a variety of eateries, meet the chefs, and learn about each of the participating restaurants.

When: Wednesday, January 6, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Where: Registration for the evening will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Platform 7, 2300 West Broadway

Dine Out Vancouver Festival

Canada’s largest annual food and drink festival, Dine Out offers an an array of ways to enjoy the flavours of the city. Back for it’s 14th year, Dine Out will one again grant Vancouverites with the opportunity to choose from a 17-day calendar of culinary events and experiences, hundreds of restaurants throughout the city and dozens of hotel options to create delicious dining experiences.

Street Food City

Back for a fifth consecutive year, Street Food City will once again bring together a collection of Vancouver food carts in one central location. Part of the Dine Out Vancouver festival, Street Food City will run January 16 to 24 on the North Plaza of the Vancouver Art Gallery. Although the official lineup of 20-plus food trucks for the 2016 event has yet to be announced, attendees to the mid-winter belly-busting event can expect to find a congregation of well-known food truck names, dishing up all manner of fare.

Gluten-Free Expo

Discover, sample, and save on hundreds of gluten-free products, from beer to pizza, and breads to perogies, while learning the ins and outs of gluten-free eating from leading experts–registered dietitians, doctors, and chefs–ready to share their knowledge.

When: January 16 to 17, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: Vancouver Convention Centre East, 1055 Canada Place

Vancouver Whisky Festival

The inaugural Vancouver Whisky Festival will take place on Monday, January 18, at Terminal City Club. In the company of brand ambassadors from Scotland and around world, Whisky enthusiasts will not only taste whisky from Scotland, Ireland, Canada, USA and Japan, but also meet whisky bloggers, writers, connoisseurs and amateurs alike.

When: Monday, January 18, from 6 p.m.

Tankfarm – Winter Brew Chef Series

Postmark Brewing and Belgard Kitchen have joined forces to bring back Tankfarm, Series 2. The three-course beer tasting dinner, will be hosted by Chef Reuben Major and Brewmaster Dominic Giraldes, who will take diners through each course and pairing.

When: Tuesday, January 19

Art, Eat & Sip on Granville Island

This self-guided food, drink and art walk, presented by Vancouver Foodster, will grant ticket holders the opportunity to visit many Granville Island resident artists, local wine and spirit producers, and several of the island’s finest restaurants, breweries, and distilleries, including Off the Tracks, Granville Island Brewing, Dockside Restaurant, Dockside Brewing, Liberty Distillery, Bon Macaron, and more.

When: Wednesday, January 20, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Where: Registration for the evening will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Granville Island Hotel. This is where attendees will show their tickets and pick up ‘Dining Passport Map Cards.’

After Hours at Vancouver Aquarium

Ever wondered what it would be like to wander around the Vancouver Aquarium after dark? Now is your chance to do so. The Vancouver Aquarium is hosting an adults-only After Hours event, where attendees can grab a beer or glass of wine and enjoy access to all the galleries while exploring the Aquarium after dark.

Celebrate Robert Burns Day at The Cascade Room

This Main Street watering hole is marking the occasion of Robert Burns Day (a celebration of the life and poetry of Scottish poet Robert Burns), with a delicious Scottish-inspired evening, featuring bagpipes, whisky, haggis, and other treats, including deep fried Mars bars. On January 25, The Cascade Room will offer a special three-course dinner menu, including Cock-a-Leekie (chicken and leek) soup, and traditional haggis with ‘neeps and tatties’ (swedes and potatoes). An a la carte menu will also be available.

33 Acres of Beer Pairing with Next Door

Nicli’s Next Door will be partnering up with 33 Acres Brewing Company and Joe Leary (host of Just Here for the Beer radio show), on January 26 to present a night of beer and delicious food. Chef Josh Gale will create a carefully crafted menu of local delights only B.C. has to offer. Each of the four courses prepared will be paired with a 33 Acres beer–specially chosen to enhance the flavours of the evening.

East meets West

In celebration of the 8th Annual Chinese Restaurant Awards, Shangri-La Hotel, Vancouver and Market by Jean-Georges present East Meets West, an epicurean feast prepared in collaboration between four well-renowned chefs. Award-winning chefs Christophe Moret and Samuel Lee Sum are flying in for the occasion. Representing the West Coast is homegrown talent Chef Ken Nakano from Shangri-La Hotel, Vancouver, and internationally acclaimed Master Pastry Chef Thomas Haas. The chefs will come together to prepare a seven-course menu.

Château de Fargues Collaboration Dinner

Chef Angus An welcomes special guests Chef Antonio Park of Montreal restaurants Park and Lavanderia, and sommelier Kurtis Kolt, for a one-of-a-kind dinner of spicy Asian cuisine paired with four vintages of Château de Fargues aged sauternes (2001, 2005, 2009, 2011). Guests will enjoy Champange on arrival, followed by a five-course meal, plus canapés.

When: Sunday, January 31, from 6:30 p.m.
